Our research monitored the email domains of 1,589 university institutions across 68 countries in South America and Africa. The use of Big Tech solutions for managing this service is predominant: 65% (1,033) of institutions use Google or Microsoft servers, while only 35% (556) use their own solutions or those from companies not aligned with GAFAM.

When stratifying the percentage of universities using GAFAM solutions, Google shows significant dominance - 50.6% (804) of analyzed institutions use the company's services, meaning half of all 1,589 universities have their communication data hosted on Google's cloud. Microsoft accounts for 14.4% (229) of analyzed universities, also representing substantial coverage.
